چکیده

The equation is deceptively simple, but there are significant problems associated with the calculation of F 0' F c' and N*. Our research program is directed at problems associated with each of the three terms. Nevertheless, we have focused our initial research on the clear-sky problem. Research on homogeneous and broken clouds problems will occupy more of our efforts during the next few years. One specific goal of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARM) is to improve the treatment of radiative transfer in general circulation models (GCM) under clear-sky, general overcast, and broken cloud conditions. We plan to contribute to this goal by attacking major problems connected with one of the dominant radiation components of the problem-longwave radiation. In particular, our long-term research goals are to

A Study of Longwave Radiation Codes for Climate Studies: Validation with Observations and Tests in General Circulation Models-an Update

Introduction to compare calculations from a set of models with operationally observed data. The differences we find will lead to the development of new models to be tested with new data. Similarly. our GCM studies will use existing GCMs to study the radiation sensitivity problem. We anticipate that the outcome of this approach will provide both a better longwave radiative forcing algorithm and ...

A Narrow Band Longwave Radiation Model Based on Parameters Fitted to Line-by-Line Radiative Transfer Model

The results from the Intercomparison of Radiation Codes Used in Climate Models (ICRCCM) (Ellingson et al. 1991) showed about ±2% differences in flux calculations between the narrowband models and line-by-bine models. Narrowband and broadband model calculations of downwelling radiance showed similar discrepancies with observations from the SPECTral Radiation Experiment (SPECTRE, see Ellingson an...

The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (arm) Program: Programmatic Background and Design of the Cloud and Radiation Test Bed

The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, is a major new program of atmospheric measurement and modeling. The program is intended to improve the understanding of processes that affect atmospheric radiation and the description of these processes in climate models. An accurate description of atmospheric radiation and its interaction with clou...

The Sensitivity of the Tropical Hydrological Cycle to ENSO

Satellite observations of temperature, water vapor, precipitation and longwave radiation are used to characterize the variation of the tropical hydrologic and energy budgets associated with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). As the tropical oceans warm during an El Niño event, the precipitation intensity, water vapor mass, and temperature of the tropical atmosphere are observed to increas...

Radiative forcing by long-lived greenhouse gases: Calculations with the AER radiative transfer models

[1] A primary component of the observed recent climate change is the radiative forcing from increased concentrations of long-lived greenhouse gases (LLGHGs). Effective simulation of anthropogenic climate change by general circulation models (GCMs) is strongly dependent on the accurate representation of radiative processes associated with water vapor, ozone, and LLGHGs. In the context of the inc...
